GTS Access to Burke Library at Union

Since the beginning of time, there’s been an agreement that allows GTS students and students of Union Theological Seminary to use each other’s library. This means that GTS students can check out materials from Union’s Burke Library, and vice versa. Here’s how to get access to this OTHER awesome theological library. (Always, always check the operating hours for the Library Information Office and for the Burke Library before hopping on that train!)

First, make sure that your GTS ID has a sticker for the current semester, then bring it and a government-issued ID with you. (The GTS IT Department can help you with questions about your GTS ID.)

Next, take the 1 train uptown to 116th Street and find Columbia University’s Butler Library (it’s “G” on this map, and here are directions  & hours).

Go to the Library Information Office,  tell them you want to register as a patron of the Burke Library, and pay $20 (check or charge) to get your Columbia ID card. This card is good for one year. You should be all set to borrow materials from the Burke Library now!

Remember that some of Burke’s holdings are stored offsite. Once you have your Columbia access, you should be able to page materials before you head uptown, but remember that this might take a day or so.

Circulating materials may be borrowed for up to 28 days, and overdue fines and lost book charges are the responsibility of the borrowing patron.

If there’s enough interest, your reference librarian would be glad to arrange a tour of the Burke Library. Get in touch with us or leave a comment below – and have a great trip uptown to Union!
